Biography

Abraham Toppan was born about 1606, based on his age of 31 at emigration in May 1637,[1] and was of of Great Yarmouth.[2] His previously reported parentage of William Toppan and Cecelia Unknown and baptism at Calbridge, parish of Coverham, Yorkshire, has been disproved: see the Disputed Origins department below.

Abraham was admitted freeman in Bang-up Yarmouth, Norfolk, in 1627 where he had served an apprenticeship with Richard Elwyn and became a cooper.[2]

He married Susanna Taylor on 28 May 1632 at St. Michael at Plea, Norwich.[3] His wife Susanna was born in the yr 1607. Her mother, Elizabeth, inherited considerable property from a second husband, Mr. John Goodale of Yarmouth, whose will is dated 1625.[four]

In the yr 1637, Abraham Toppan, with his wife Susanna, children Peter and Elizabeth, and maid-servant Anne Goodin, took passage in the Mary Ann for New England.[5] His mother in law, Mrs. Goodale, took passage soon after with her girl Elizabeth Goodale, nearly 1638.[6]

He was admitted into the township of Newbury, Massachusetts on 17 Nov 1637.[7] At different times during the post-obit twelvemonth, several lots of land were granted to him, on one of which he erected his dwelling, nearly where the meeting house was built, in 1646, a few rods due north from the firm of Captain Richard Adams.

During his life he fabricated "sundry voyages to the Barbadoes, of which one or ii were profitable; the produce being brought home in sugar, cotton fiber, wool and molasses, which were and so commodities rendering great profit, being at twelve pence for wool, sugar at half-dozen or eight pence per pound turn a profit - of which he brought neat quantities". (Registry of deeds, Salem, MA).

He fabricated his will June 30, 1670.[8] In information technology he speaks of "having done for his son Peter beyond what I accept done or can do in proportion for ye residue of my children". He died 5 November 1672 in Newbury, [9] anile lx-six years in the house on "Toppan's Lane", which he had congenital around 1670 for his son Jacob. He was buried in the 1st Parish Burial Basis in Newbury, Essex County, in Massachusetts Bay Colony.[10] His widow died March 20, 1689, anile eighty-2 years. Her mother, Mrs. Goodale, died at Newbury, MA, April viii, 1647.

The children of Abraham and Susanna Taylor Toppan were:[xi]

  1. Peter, probably baptized 11 Aug 1633 Yarmouth, Norfolk, England;[12] married Jane Batt;
  2. Elizabeth, baptised eleven Jan 1634 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England;[13] married Samuel Mighill of Rowley, MA;
  3. Abraham, born at Newbury 1644; married Ruth Pike;
  4. Jacob, built-in 24 Dec 1645 at Newbury;[xiv] married Hannah Sewall;
  5. Susanna, born 13 Jun 1649 at Newbury;[15] may have been the child who died in that location in July 1649.
  6. John, built-in 23 Apr 1651 at Newbury;[16] married Martha Browne;
  7. Isaac, built-in 1653, married (one) Hannah Kent, (2) Mary Marsh.

Disputed Origins

Brandon Fradd published in the April 2007 edition of the NEHGR Vol. 161:92-94, an article "Abraham Toppan was not a Yorkshire Human being," in which he stated:

"In conclusion, the identification of Abraham Toppan as a Yorkshire man is entirely without foundation and must be abased. His ancestry is currently unknown."

He disputed an 1879 article in the Register based on the work of the "notorious Horatio Gates Somerby." (Come across more about Somerby here). He makes the signal that the baptisms cited for Abraham in 1606 and supposed sibling Cecilia in 1608, and burial of Isaac in 1612 in the Coverham, Yorkshire parish records are fictitious as the Coverham registers do not begin until 1707; that there are Bishop'south Transcripts, but none mentions anyone named Toppan/Tophan/Topham. He continues on and shreds the 1879 commodity completely past comparing the wills used in the article against the data and disproving all the relationships.
